Ten Summoner’s Tales $11.88 After two albums of muted, mature jazz-inflected pop, the last being an explicit album about death, Sting created his first unapologetically pop album since the Police with Ten Summoner’s Tales. The title, a rather awkward pun on his given last name, is significant, since it emphasizes that this album is a collection of songs, without any musical conceits or lyrical concepts tying it together. And, frankly, that’s a bit of a relief after the oppressively somber The Soul Cages and the hushed though lovely, Nothing Like the Sun. Sting even loosens up enough to crack jokes, both clever (the winking litany of celebrity pains of “Epilogue [Nothing 'Bout Me]“) and condescending (the sneeringly catchy cowboy tale “Love Is Stronger Than Justice [The Munificent Seven]“), and the result is his best solo record. In places, it’s easily as pretentious as his earlier work, but that’s undercut by writing that hasn’t been this sharp and melodic since the Police, plus his most varied set of songs since Synchronicity. True, there isn’t a preponderance of flat-out classics — only the surging opener “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,” the understated swing of “It’s Probably Me,” and the peaceful ballad “Fields of Gold” rank as classics — but, as an album, Ten Summoner’s Tales is more consistently satisfying than anything else in his catalog. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: Larry Adler – Chromatic Harmonica, Harmonica; Brendan Power – Chromatic Harmonica, Harmonica; Sian Bell – Cello; James Boyd – Viola; Paul Franklin – Pedal Steel; Kathryn Tickell – Fiddle, Northumbrian Smallpipes; John Barclay – Trumpet; Guy Barker – Trumpet; Vinnie Colaiuta – Drums; Richard Edwards – Trombone; Simon Fischer – Violin; Dave Hea |

Suite Unseen: Summoner of the Ghost $13.98 Drummer/percussionist Babatunde Lea’s Suite Unseen CD has plenty of variety and is wide-ranging. There are hard bop features for trombonist Steve Turre and tenor saxophonist Richard Howell (with the front line sometimes recalling the Jazz Crusaders of the 1960s), a display for Turre’s conch shells on another selection, some chanting, brief percussion interludes, and a five-part suite by Lea that is spread throughout this disc rather than occurring in consecutive tracks. “Suite Unseen” would have been more effective if its movements had been placed together, but one can adjust the CD player to achieve that. The other nine numbers all fit in well and, with Glen Pearson contributing some McCoy Tyner-inspired piano and steady work from bassist Geoff Brennan (Ron Belcher takes his place on one number) and percussionist Bujo Jones, this is a spirited and very musical outing. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Steve Turre – Conch Shell, Trombone; Richard Howell – Kalimba, Percussion, Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor), Saxophone, Tama, Vocals; Babatunde Lea – Balafon, Conga, Drums, Percussion, Vocals; Ron Belcher – Double Bass; Geoff Brennan – Bass, Bass (Acoustic), Double Bass; Bujo Kevin Jones – Percussion; Glen Pearson – Piano |

Hellgate – Awakening a Runner’s Soul $18.48 Josh Stanton is a distance runner. When he was young, he tortured himself mercilessly on the track and, even though his goal of making an Olympic team always seemed just out of reach, he struggled to maximize his potential. While racing, every second was precious and no sacrifice was too large. The training paid off and, in his early twenty’s, Josh ran hundreds of races from the mile to the marathon, consistently improving and winning. Then, at age 23 it was over. During a routine track workout, a nagging achilles problem escalated into a career ending injury. Knowing his best performances were behind him, he reluctantly retired from racing and tried to bury his dreams. 20 years later, by chance, Josh stumbles into the fringe sport of ultra-marathoning and rekindles his lost passion for running. After a few years of learning the ropes, he enters the Hellgate endurance run, a 66-mile trail race in the Virginia Mountains. Unable to come up with the performance he expects, Josh is compelled to answer a simple question. Why is he here? At age 43, Josh has to re-evaluate his motivation for running. Can he run for the pure joy of it, or is he to be forever tortured by the lost glory of his past. He has to search his soul to find answers to the questions that have haunted him ever since he started his comeback. |

Tris flees with three friends: Soterius, captain of the guard; Carroway, the courtd; and Harrtuck, a member of the royal guard. Tris harbors a deep secret.
